Lent
The Third Sunday of Lent
Brothers and sisters,
The online sermon for this Third Sunday of Lent has been published, the link is https://youtu.be/zWnZ7TSUfU0. The link for the full playlist where all of the videos are kept is: https://tinyurl.com/bdc27jhv. If you can, please like, subscribe, and share these links in any way you can.
This Sunday the gospel retells the account of Jesus' meeting with a particular Samaritan woman at a well in the heat of the noonday sun. By engaging in conversation with her Jesus was breaking a number of cultural taboos, and the fact of her 'complicated' love life only adds to the scandal - it is perhaps no coincidence that she is drawing water when nobody else is around. In short, this is not the sort of person a respectable first century Jewish teacher should be seen with.
Their conversation revolves around a series of playful puns; possibly intentional misunderstandings of one-another. There is something sassy about this seemingly ostracised Samaritan woman. She is seeking refreshment, renewal and life worthy of the name. Using the analogy of the refreshing water in the well, Jesus declares that what he offers will be within those who receive it like spring of life-giving water gushing up to eternal life. What he offers is himself.
No matter who we are now. No matter who we have been in the past. Jesus invites us to come to him for refreshment, renewal and life in all its fullness.
Every blessing,
Fr Myles
Rector
