WELCOME

We welcome everyone, from those who’ve walked the journey of faith for decades to those just beginning to wonder what it’s all about.

Whether you’re a parent rushing from one thing to the next, a teenager juggling life’s challenges, or someone savouring a quieter season of life, there’s a place for you here.

If you’re a morning person or someone who only just made it out of bed, you’re welcome. If life feels a bit messy, overwhelming, or uncertain—come in. Whether you prefer tea or coffee, football or knitting, roast dinners or something out of a packet, we’re glad you’re here.

We welcome those who’ve known the church all their lives and those who’ve stayed away until now. If you’re curious, doubting, hurting, or just in need of a peaceful moment, St Clement’s is a place for you.

No matter how you’ve found your way here - because grandma insisted, you got lost, or you just felt like it - you are welcome.

Whoever you are, wherever you’ve come from, and whatever your story, we’re delighted to welcome you into the life of this Christian community.

OUR PATRON SAINT

Saint Clement, one of the earliest bishops of Rome, is celebrated for his unshakable faith and enduring legacy as the patron saint of mariners.

His story of ministry, sacrifice, and unwavering devotion holds special meaning for the traditionally coastal community of St Clement’s in Leigh-on-Sea.

Tradition tells of Clement’s martyrdom -bound to an anchor and cast into the sea - a powerful symbol of his steadfast faith and sacrifice. This image resonates deeply in a town connected to the water, reminding us of divine guidance and protection amid life’s challenges.

For centuries, Saint Clement has been a spiritual anchor for seafarers and communities alike, embodying courage, hope, and faith in the face of adversity. His legacy continues to inspire all who seek strength and direction in their journey.

HISTORY

St Clement’s Church has stood at the heart of Leigh-on-Sea for centuries, its origins dating back to the 13th century. Rebuilt in the late 15th or early 16th century using Kentish ragstone and flint rubble, the church has always been a place where history, tradition, and community come together.

Elements of the earlier building, like the 14th-century chancel and pre-Reformation piscina, still serve as reminders of its ancient roots, while additions like the Tudor brick porch reflect its evolving story.

Generations of worshippers have gathered here to celebrate life’s joys and find comfort in its challenges. Over time, the church has adapted to the needs of the growing town, providing a welcoming space for Leigh’s vibrant community. The stained glass windows, crafted by renowned artists, offer a visual testament to the creativity and devotion that have shaped this sacred place.

As part of the Anglo-Catholic tradition in the Church of England, St Clement’s continues to be a hub of worship, fellowship, and service. Nestled in the Archdeaconry of Southend in the Diocese of Chelmsford, it remains a cornerstone of local life, embracing both its deep-rooted heritage and its vital role in today’s community.
